Common questions when switching
Excel is free and I already know it — why switch?
Excel is a general spreadsheet tool, not an engineering calculation tool — it has no concept of units, so a mismatched unit (adding feet to meters, or a force to a length) won't raise an error; it just gives you a wrong number. CalcAuthor checks units automatically and catches that before it ships.
What about the templates and macros I've already built?
Those don't transfer automatically. You'd rebuild your standard calculations as CalcAuthor calculation blocks, which is a one-time cost in exchange for not maintaining spreadsheet templates and their formatting by hand going forward.
Is CalcAuthor as flexible as a blank spreadsheet?
It's purpose-built for engineering calculations and reports rather than general-purpose data work — you won't use it for a budget tracker. For the specific job of "calculate, then write it up as a deliverable," it does more of the work for you than a spreadsheet does.
